From Tuesday 7 March to Thursday 16 March 2017 at the John Bowen Gallery in the Town Hall at Malmesbury the painting, photography and assemblage of Maureen Hawkridge, Mike Hawkridge and Alison King will be on exhibition – three exhibitors whose works are quite different in content and style.
You can explore my photography here on this web site. In our “Differing Viewpoints” exhibition I will be showing images that look beyond the surface appearance of the subject to reveal the beauty in modern structures and other forms. My colour images are abstracted from their context to form interesting compositions; images of modern office buildings reveal enigmatic geometric shapes and patterns; details from a 1950s American car captures the lines and shapes so evocative of that era. My images of Canary Wharf are in monochrome, concentrating the mind on the shapes, lines and textures of the structures.
Maureen’s paintings capture moments that inspired her, from evocative scenes of Venice to boats and seascapes. She chooses subject matter with strong underlying forms using these to structure her pictures. Her paintings are also about an emotional reaction to what is seen and she tries to capture that essence so that it can be experienced again later and to communicate a sense of atmosphere as well as a pleasing balance of form and colour. Besides painting, she assembles driftwood sculptures of birds and nautical scenes, searching for interesting shapes of driftwood that suggest the sculptures which they might become.
Alison has evolved a unique and personal representation of her experiences and memories, using graphic imagery to create a theatrical effect. Many of Alison’s pictures are a celebration of life, and of the diversity of people. Others are about a particular location, which appears almost like a stage set where something is about to happen. The graphic elements such as circles, arcs and ribbons which often appear in Alison’s work are a framework to set off the main images.
Exhibiting for the first time in the same gallery space Maureen, Mike and Alison will show you their differing viewpoints on the world about us.
